During the 21st European Week of Regions and Cities 2023 in Brussels, SOCIO-BEE captivated the audience with an engaging live demonstration, showcasing its cutting-edge technological solutions for citizen science initiatives.

Socio-Bee gained significant attention during the 21st European Week of Regions and Cities, held from 9th to 12th of October 2023 in Brussels, Belgium. This year’s conference, themed “Thriving Regions, Stronger Europe”, is a prestigious event in the European Union’s calendar, providing the opportunity for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers to exchange insights and ideas on regional and urban development. Participation in this event was valuable for SOCIO-BEE as it offered a unique opportunity to showcase its innovative approach to citizen engagement and urban sustainability to key stakeholders and decision-makers in the EU.

During the workshop “Citizen science (CS) and co-design tools for cities”, Dr. Maria Kotzagianni and Mr. Anargyros Roussos from Municipality of Amaroussion delivered a live demonstration of SOCIO-BEE cutting-edge technological solutions captivating the audience’s attention. SOCIO-BEE’s presentation showcased a pioneering approach to citizen engagement for supporting pro-environmental initiatives, particularly in orchestrating experimental campaigns for air quality monitoring. Following the live demonstration, in-depth discussions were held with attendees, supported by our coordination team from the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) and partners including ECSA – European Citizen Science Association, HKU (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht), and Hypertech SA. Attendees had the opportunity to delve into SOCIO-BEE’s innovative technological tools including the SOCIO-BEE platform, mobile application, and portable air quality sensor, designed to empower citizens in designing campaigns and collecting air quality data.

These tools, offer a glimpse into the future of citizen science engagement and urban sustainability, emphasing the importance of fostering active and connected communities. Thus, SOCIO-BEE aims to contribute to the creation of more sustainable and healthier cities by empowering citizens to play a central role in shaping their environments.
