ABOUT THE PILOT
SOCIO-BEE is a European citizen science project that aims to outline and execute citizen science experiments with the environment as a central theme. Using portable devices, citizens will measure air quality with the support of local officials and action groups. Ancona is one of the three European cities in which the project is being developed; the results obtained in the three cities will allow us to validate the effectiveness of the project. We use the beehive metaphor because the contribution and work of all participants is important and necessary:
- Worker bees take measurements to collect data in different areas using a cell phone and sensor.
- Queen bees design the campaigns you can participate in.
- Beekeepers will take care of the hive and make sure it grows.
- Bears analyze data collected with sensors and cell phones to make better policies.
Air quality measurements are obtained, they are analysed, discussed and conclusions are drawn about the measurements. These conclusions will help us validate hypotheses aimed at mitigating and reducing air pollution in the city of Ancona. And they will allow us to influence decision-making processes to reduce pollution levels in cities and create trust between citizens and institutions.
